2. The trains of Romania in 10 days

Discover the most scenic of Romania’s train routes, the last genuine industrial narrow gauge trains still in use in Europe, and some very interesting locomotive museums.

From Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest, Brașov, or Sibiu.

Follow the best train routes of Romania, spend a night in a sleeper train, see the most special narrow gauge trains (the longest one on the Vaser Valley, ”Mocănița” from Moldovița and the freight one from Fieni-Pietroșița), have a look at the Ukrainian broad gauge on the border train station, visit the best train collections existing in that part of Europe, and also see some of the most important tourist attractions in Romania.

Itinerary:

Day 1. Departure from Cluj-Napoca. Visit the Alba Iulia’s Vauban fortress and Hunedoara Castle.

Day 2. Ride the Oravița-Anina train (named Romania’s Semmering) and visit the Reșița train museum.

Day 3. Go by train on the Bumbești-Livezeni line (39 tunnels and 35 bridges), and visit the Sibiu locomotive collection.

Day 4. Walk around Sibiu medieval town and see the Cornățel „Mocănița” train, an undergoing narrow-gauge line restoration project.

Day 5. See the narrow-gauge diesel limestone carrier Fieni-Pietroșița and visit Peleș Castle, a former royal residence.

Day 6. Visit the Romanian Railway Museum and the city of Bucharest. Take the night train to Maramureș.

Day 7. In the morning, ride the famous the famous Salva-Vișeu route. Visit the Merry Cemetery of Săpânța and the Memorial of the Victims of Communism from Sighetu Marmației.

Day 8. Go up on Vaser Valley narrow-gauge line by a forest train, by a minivan on rails, or by tourist steam train (it depends which one is available on that day).

Day 9. Ride the Moldovița „Mocănița” narrow-gauge steam train, visit the Moldovița UNESCO-painted monastery, and see broad-gauge Ukrainian freight trains at Dornești railway station.

Day 10. Visit the little-known Dej train museum and go back to Cluj-Napoca.

Starting and ending in Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest, Brașov or Sibiu, the standard tour includes the accommodation, the guiding fee, the transport, and all train and entrance tickets.
