8. Transylvania in 3 days

See the best of Transylvania, including several UNESCO sites; discover its extraordinary culture mix, castles, villages, people, and the Romanian and Saxon cuisine…

Itinerary:

Day 1. Start from Cluj-Napoca. Visit Turda Salt Mine, a stunning underground complex. Go to Alba Iulia, a former capital of Transylvania, with its mighty Vauban citadel and Romanesque Cathedral (1000 years old). Reach Sibiu, the chief city of the Transylvanian Saxons. See HuetGreat and Lesser Squares, the Gothic Evangelical Cathedral, merchant houses featuring “the sleepy eye” dormers, the Liars Bridge, and the Guilds Tree. Overnight in Sibiu.

Day 2. Visit Bran Castle (the so-called “Dracula Castle”). See Peleș Castle in Sinaia, the residence of King Charles I of Romania, one of the most beautiful and luxurious summer royal palaces of Europe. Arrive in Brașov, see the Council Square, the narrow Rope Street, the large Gothic Black Church, featuring a collection of precious Anatolian rugs, and walk on the lovely pedestrian Republicii Street, with its restaurants, shops, and outdoor cafes. Overnight in Brașov. 

Day 3. See Viscri village, a UNESCO site, famous for the support of King Charles III. As a variant, see Prejmer instead, the strongest village fortress in Romania (UNESCO). Visit Sighișoara (UNESCO) and a lovely inhabited medieval citadel, the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler (“Dracula”). Walk around the Citadel, climb the Scholars’ Staircase, and visit the massive Clock Tower, with its astronomical clock and museum. Get back to Cluj-Napoca.
